NIGERIA — On May 20, 2025, at approximately 2 a.m., seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State. According to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the escape resulted from a structural breach caused by a heavy rainstorm that compromised the facility’s perimeter wall.
Security Response and Manhunt
In response, the NCoS, in coordination with the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), ramped up security around the facility. Armed personnel have been deployed, and access to the center is restricted.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation and is overseeing efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped inmates. The NCoS is collaborating with security agencies and local community leaders in the manhunt.
Public Appeal and Bounty
To aid the search, the federal government announced a ₦5 million reward for information leading to the inmates’ arrest. The NCoS is urging the public to report any information to the nearest security agency or through its Response Desk at 07087086005, 09060004598, or 08075050006. All tips will be handled confidentially.
Ongoing Investigation
As of May 21, the Osun State Police Command had not received an official briefing from the NCoS but confirmed it is actively participating in recapture efforts.
The NCoS has biometric records of the escaped inmates, which are being used in the search. Security agencies remain in coordinated efforts to return the fugitives to custody.
This incident raises concerns about the structural resilience of correctional facilities during extreme weather. The NCoS has yet to release specifics on how the breach occurred.
The situation remains under active investigation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
