Indonesian Lawmakers Request Support for Humanitarian Aid to Myanmar at AIPA Meeting

PoliticsIndonesian Lawmakers Request Support for Humanitarian Aid to Myanmar at AIPA Meeting

At the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) held in Kuala Lumpur on September 17, 2025, Indonesian lawmakers demanded that more humanitarian aid be provided to Myanmar to alleviate the continuous crisis caused by natural disasters and the civil war in the country for a long time. The Indonesian delegation, led by Mardani Ali Sera, head of the House of Representatives’ Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Body (BKSAP), tabled two draft resolutions: “Addressing Humanitarian Assistance in Myanmar” and “Empowering ASEAN Communities Through Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation on Green and Blue Economies in ASEAN.” These resolutions seek to encourage joint commitments within ASEAN to both supply immediate relief to the populations of Myanmar who are the victims and to launch sustainable economic growth activities through green and blue economy projects.

Mardani stressed that as a member of the founding family of ASEAN, Indonesia has the obligation to set the example and provide the necessary assistance to Myanmar, thus highlighting the impact of the crisis beyond the immediate area and the principle of ASEAN solidarity in dealing with the challenge.

The AIPA meeting, held under the theme “Parliaments at the Forefront for Inclusive Growth and a Sustainable ASEAN,” was a platform that allowed parliamentarians to engage with and explore solutions to a wide range of critical regional issues. The enacted resolutions will become agenda items at the Political and Economic Committees of AIPA for discussions, and they demonstrate the willingness of Indonesia to use the regional parliamentary network to solve vexing humanitarian issues and boost/develop sustainable policies in the Southeast Asian region.
