TOKYO – Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party) officially formed a coalition government on [Date], following an agreement that led to the election of Sanae Takaichi as the nation’s new prime minister. The alliance was formalized after weeks of negotiations following the recent general election, where the LDP failed to secure a simple majority in the House of Representatives.

In a vote held during an extraordinary Diet session, Ms. Takaichi secured 261 of the 465 votes in the lower house, formally appointing her to the nation’s top post. The vote confirms the new governing majority established by the LDP, which holds 239 seats, and Nippon Ishin, with 22 seats. The main opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), holds 97 seats.

In a joint press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office, leaders from both parties outlined the key priorities of the new government. Prime Minister Takaichi stated, “This coalition is built on a shared vision for a strong and prosperous Japan. We will work to address the pressing economic and security challenges facing our nation with decisiveness and unity.”

Nobuyuki Baba, leader of Nippon Ishin no Kai, addressed his party’s decision to enter a formal coalition for the first time. “Our agreement with the LDP is based on a commitment to substantive policy reforms,” Baba said. “We will advance discussions on constitutional revision, implement measures to stimulate economic growth, and ensure fiscal discipline.”

The coalition agreement, released to the public, details several policy pillars:

Constitutional Revision: Both parties have agreed to actively promote debate within the Diet on amending the Constitution of Japan.
Economic Policy: The government plans to pursue deregulation and administrative reform aimed at boosting private sector investment.
National Security: The agreement includes provisions to increase defense spending and enhance Japan’s security capabilities, citing the regional geopolitical environment.

The formation of the coalition marks a significant development in Japan’s political landscape. While the LDP has historically governed with its partner Komeito, the results of the last election necessitated a broader alliance to ensure stable governance and the passage of legislation. Komeito, which remains in the ruling bloc, has publicly stated its support for the new framework.

Leaders of opposition parties have responded to the new government’s formation. Kenta Izumi, leader of the CDP, said in a statement, “We will rigorously scrutinize the policies of the new Takaichi administration and hold the government accountable in the Diet.” He questioned the compatibility of the two parties’ platforms on social and economic issues.

The new cabinet is expected to be announced within the week. Prime Minister Takaichi will hold her first official press conference following the cabinet’s formal attestation ceremony at the Imperial Palace.
