Al-Qaeda-Linked Group Claims Responsibility for Deadly Attacks on Malian Military Bases

PoliticsAl-Qaeda-Linked Group Claims Responsibility for Deadly Attacks on Malian Military Bases

MALI — On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, claimed responsibility for a deadly assault on a Malian military base in Boulkessi, near the border with Burkina Faso. According to two security sources, the attack killed more than 30 Malian soldiers.

The following day, June 2, JNIM launched a separate attack on a military camp in the northern city of Timbuktu. According to the Malian army, the attack was repelled, resulting in the deaths of 13 assailants.

Boulkessi Base Overrun
Located in central Mali, the Boulkessi base was overrun by JNIM militants during Sunday’s assault. While the Malian army acknowledged the attack, it did not confirm the number of casualties. Security sources, however, reported that more than 30 soldiers were killed. This attack is part of a growing wave of violence in the region. Since the start of May, over 400 soldiers have reportedly been killed by insurgents across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

Timbuktu Attack Foiled
On June 2, militants targeted a military camp in Timbuktu. The Malian army reported successfully repelling the assault, killing 13 attackers. Local sources described a car bomb detonation followed by an exchange of gunfire. Residents in the city center reported explosions and automatic weapon fire, prompting civilians to take shelter.

Wider Regional Context
JNIM remains active across West Africa’s Sahel region, which encompasses Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The group has carried out numerous attacks on both military and civilian targets using tactics such as sieges, kidnappings, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and landmines.

In many cases, armed Islamist groups have blocked humanitarian access, imposed forced taxation, and destroyed vital civilian infrastructure—including religious sites, health centers, food reserves, and water supplies. These actions are aimed at controlling supply routes and expanding territorial influence.

Implications
The recent attacks highlight the persistent instability and growing threat of insurgency in the Sahel region. Despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts by the Malian government and regional partners, the operations of JNIM and other armed groups continue to undermine security and endanger both military personnel and civilians.

According to GhanaWeb, JNIM claimed responsibility for both attacks, emphasizing the group’s continued operational capacity in a region marked by complex and shifting conflict dynamics.
