Police in South Africa’s Limpopo province are investigating two separate murder cases following the fatal stabbing of a Zimbabwean farmer and the subsequent death of a man suspected of his killing. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the initial incident, which took place at a plot in Westenburg on Monday.

According to a statement from SAPS, police were called to the scene at the Ivydale plot where they discovered the body of Philip Mabusha, 47, inside his Toyota Hilux vehicle. Authorities reported that Mabusha had sustained multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the discovery of Mabusha’s body, members of the local community located three men they suspected were involved in his death. The three individuals were apprehended and assaulted by the residents.

Police officials stated that when they arrived, they found that one of the suspects, a 30-year-old man, had died from injuries sustained during the assault. The two other suspects were rescued by police and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. They remain under police guard while recovering.

Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, confirmed the details in a public statement. The two hospitalized suspects were officially arrested in connection with the murder of Mabusha.

“The police have opened cases of murder, kidnapping, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” Hadebe stated. The investigation is twofold, covering both the murder of Mabusha and the subsequent murder and kidnapping of the individuals apprehended by the community.

Hadebe condemned the actions of the residents, urging the public to report criminal activity to law enforcement and refrain from taking matters into their own hands.

“We strongly condemn the violent actions of the community members,” the commissioner said. “Vigilantism is a criminal offense and will not be tolerated. We urge everyone to cooperate with the police and allow the legal process to unfold.”

Police have not yet released the names of the arrested or deceased suspects. The investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
