Micron Taiwan Union Authorizes Strike Over Bonus Dispute

BusinessMicron Taiwan Union Authorizes Strike Over Bonus Dispute

A union representing workers at Micron Technology’s facilities in Taoyuan announced Wednesday that its members have voted to authorize a strike. The vote follows a dispute with the U.S.-based semiconductor company over changes to its employee bonus compensation plan.

The Taoyuan City Confederation of Trade Unions’ Micron Technology branch confirmed the outcome of the vote, which was held from Oct. 16 to Oct. 25. According to a statement released by the union, 806 of its approximately 1,000 members participated in the ballot. The results showed 790 members in favor of strike action, with 10 opposed and six invalid votes, representing over 98% approval among those who cast ballots.

The central issue, as outlined by union officials, is a modification to Micron’s bonus calculation formula. The union contends that the new system, implemented earlier this year, has resulted in a reduction in overall compensation for its members compared to the previous structure. Union representatives have stated their primary demand is for Micron to reinstate the former bonus plan or provide equivalent financial compensation to affected employees.

Following the vote’s conclusion, the union indicated it has submitted the results to the Taoyuan City Government’s Department of Labor for official recording. Under Taiwan’s Act for Settlement of Labor-Management Disputes, a union must obtain majority support from its members in a vote before it can legally proceed with a strike.

While the vote grants the union the legal authority to conduct a strike, it does not mean a work stoppage is imminent. Taiwanese labor regulations require a formal mediation process between the union and the company before a strike can commence. The union has not yet announced a specific date for a potential strike, stating that it remains open to further negotiations with Micron’s management.

In a statement, Micron Taiwan said it is committed to ongoing and open communication with its employees. The company stated it respects the legal rights of its workers and will continue to engage in dialogue with the union through established channels to seek a resolution. Micron has previously described its global bonus program as competitive and designed to align with the company’s performance.

Micron Technology is a major global producer of memory and storage solutions, including DRAM and NAND flash memory chips. The company’s manufacturing facilities in Taoyuan are a significant part of its global production network.
