Shares of MicroStrategy (MSTR) declined by 8% during trading on Monday, February 2, 2026. The decrease in the company’s stock price occurred after the market price of bitcoin briefly fell below MicroStrategy’s average purchase price for the cryptocurrency, which serves as its primary treasury reserve asset.
According to a regulatory filing from the company dated February 2, MicroStrategy’s average cost per bitcoin is $76,052. On Monday, the price of bitcoin traded at a low of approximately $74,500. MicroStrategy’s corporate website states the company holds approximately $56 billion in bitcoin.
The price movement for bitcoin, which decreased by 11% in the five days leading up to Monday, occurred amid broader market activity. Market reports noted several factors, including geopolitical discussions involving the United States and European leaders and investor expectations of potential shifts in U.S. monetary policy. On the preceding Friday, President Donald Trump announced Kevin Warsh as his selection for Federal Reserve chair.
In addition to these factors, data from the analytics platform Coinglass showed that more than $2 billion in leveraged cryptocurrency futures positions, including both long and short contracts, were liquidated in the period beginning last Thursday. These liquidations occurred as the price of bitcoin declined.
MicroStrategy, a business intelligence software company, first began acquiring bitcoin as a treasury asset in 2020 under the direction of its chairman, Michael Saylor. The company’s stock performance has since become closely correlated with the price of the digital currency.
