President Emmerson Mnangagwa is scheduled to preside over the first national Munhumutapa Day celebrations on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Mvurwi, a town in the Mashonaland Central province. According to reports from New Zimbabwe, the president will also officially launch a 259-hectare housing project designated for young people during the event.
The commemoration follows a declaration by President Mnangagwa’s administration establishing Sept. 15 as a new annual public holiday.
Preparations in Mashonaland Central were made to accommodate a large number of attendees. Reports indicated that organizers anticipated a turnout of more than 100,000 people. To facilitate the event, local infrastructure, including roads leading to the venue, underwent upgrades. The main site for the celebrations was reported to be 95 percent complete in the days leading up to the event.
In addition to the official holiday observance, the proceedings will include the launch of a government housing initiative. The project covers a 259-hectare area and is intended to provide residential plots for youths in the region. Further details on the project’s timeline and beneficiary selection process were not specified in the initial reports. The event combines the cultural commemoration with the announcement of a development project aimed at the country’s younger demographic.
