Pakistani Forces Intercept Two Drones Near Rawalpindi Military HQ

PoliticsPakistani Forces Intercept Two Drones Near Rawalpindi Military HQ

Pakistani security forces intercepted and brought down two drones on Monday at separate locations in Rawalpindi, a city that contains the Pakistani military’s General Headquarters, according to security sources cited by the newspaper Dawn. The sources reported that the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were neutralized using electronic countermeasures.

The first drone was downed near Ayub National Park, while the second was intercepted in the vicinity of the former Chaklala Airport, an area adjacent to the military’s headquarters. Security sources described the drones to Dawn as “rudimentary” quadcopter-style devices.

Following the interception, officials reportedly secured the drones and launched an investigation to identify their point of origin and the purpose of their flight.

As of Tuesday, no official statement has been issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media and public relations wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, or by local police authorities regarding the incident. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for operating the drones.

The operation of civilian drones is subject to strict regulations in Pakistan. Flying UAVs is prohibited in sensitive areas, particularly near airports, government buildings, and military installations, due to security protocols. The locations where the two drones were intercepted fall within a high-security zone that is monitored closely.

This event occurs amid a broader context of security vigilance regarding unauthorized drone activity in sensitive airspace globally. Authorities in many countries have implemented countermeasures and legal frameworks to manage the use of commercially available drones. The investigation into the Rawalpindi incident is ongoing.
