Patrick Clancy, whose three children died in January 2023, discussed the events and their aftermath in his first televised interview, which aired Sunday on the CBS program 60 Minutes. The interview comes after a Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial in the murder trial of his ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of causing the children’s deaths.
A judge declared the mistrial on Sept. 4 after a jury deadlocked. According to reports from the trial, 11 jurors found Lindsay Clancy was not criminally responsible due to suffering from postpartum psychosis, while one juror disagreed. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office is expected to announce this month whether it will pursue a second trial.
During the interview, Patrick Clancy addressed online criticism and commentary related to the case.
“It’s deeply harmful to the legacy of my children,” he said. “It is a huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health. And it’s done real harm to real people, myself included but also others.”
Clancy recounted the period leading up to the deaths of his children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. He told 60 Minutes he first observed his ex-wife experiencing anxiety and sleep deprivation in the fall of 2022, following the birth of their youngest child. Her condition led to a stay at McLean Hospital, a psychiatric facility, in early January 2023.
The children’s deaths occurred on Jan. 24, 2023, in the family’s Duxbury home. Authorities allege Lindsay Clancy strangled the children before attempting to take her own life.
Patrick Clancy stated in the interview that he has forgiven his ex-wife and attributes the events to her mental illness. He also discussed his own experience in the aftermath, including his move to New York and his subsequent marriage to Rachel Danis, who appeared with him during the interview.
Both Patrick and Lindsay Clancy have filed separate civil lawsuits related to the medical care she received. Lindsay Clancy’s lawsuit alleges medical malpractice and negligence against her care providers. Patrick Clancy has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against doctors and other medical professionals involved in his ex-wife’s treatment.
Lindsay Clancy is currently being held at Tewksbury Hospital, a state medical facility. The district attorney’s office has not yet publicly announced its decision regarding a retrial.
