Porsche AG executives on Wednesday announced a strategic plan to increase focus on high-end and limited-edition vehicles, as the company prepares for what it termed a transitional year with significant product launches and adjusted profitability forecasts.
During its annual press conference, the Volkswagen-owned sports car manufacturer detailed its financial outlook and corporate strategy. Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke stated that the company anticipates a group operating return on sales for 2024 to be in the range of 15% to 17%. This figure compares to the 18% return on sales Porsche achieved in 2023.
The company attributed the revised forecast to the costs associated with launching four new models within a single year, an undertaking CEO Oliver Blume described as the “biggest year of product launches in the company’s history.” The new product lines set for release include updates to the Panamera, the all-electric Macan, the Taycan, and the brand’s flagship 911 model.
In 2023, Porsche reported group sales revenue of €40.5 billion, a 7.7% increase from the previous year. The operating profit for the same period was €7.3 billion, a 7.6% increase.
To navigate the costs of the product rollouts and achieve its long-term financial targets, Porsche outlined a plan centered on increasing profitability through high-margin vehicles. The strategy, referred to as “Road to 20,” aims to secure a group operating return on sales of over 20% in the long term.
Key elements of this strategy include an emphasis on more exclusive, limited-edition models and expanding its Sonderwunsch, or “special request,” program, which allows for extensive vehicle customization at a premium price. Executives pointed to models like the 911 as central to this approach, where higher-priced variants and customization options contribute significantly to profit margins.
“We are focusing on the future and have invested heavily in the comprehensive renewal and modernization of our product portfolio,” Blume said in a statement released by the company. He added that the company is laying the groundwork in 2024 for future financial success.
Meschke reinforced this position, noting that the extensive product updates require substantial initial investment but are intended to establish a strong position for the years ahead. The company confirmed it would maintain its dividend policy proposal for the 2023 fiscal year.
