The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed a bloody assault on the Abu Shouk displaced persons camp near El-Fasher, North Darfur on August 11, 2025, killing 40 people and injuring 19.
Local rights groups and humanitarian observers reported that paramilitary violence led to death and injury.
In addition to the violence that was just mentioned, RSF went on the raids at residential areas in the camp. They were even more specifically targeting civilians in their tents and homes while doing so.
The RSF presence in the camp as well as that they were in control of the escape routes were confirmed by the satellite images.
More than 450,000 internally displaced persons live in the Abu Shouk camp, which is heavily aggrieved by a number of incidents as it is one of the most attacked places because of the ongoing Sudanese civil war.
The city of El-Fasher is the last major urban area in Darfur that is still under the control of the army. RSF sieges, among other things, have been the cause of a very limited supply of necessary resources such as food, water, and medical aid to the displaced populations.
The UN revealed that 60 people died of starvation in one week, the victims were mostly women and children, and almost 300,000 are at the verge of starvation.
The RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been fighting since April 2023. The conflict has resulted in the death of thousands of people and has displaced up to 12 million individuals. In contrast, five days after the event, from April 11-13, 2025, RSF troops raided Zamzam refugee camp, killing over 1,500 people.
Investigators who made the report estimated that the death toll would continue rising past 2,000. During the attack, the offenders killed, abducted, raped, and looted as per the testimonies of the witnesses.
The International Criminal Court is still investigating these incidents along with the war crimes in Darfur, yet, the humanitarian crisis in the area is deepening.
