Hyundai Motor Group and the South Korean government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding for a 9 trillion won (approximately $6.3 billion) investment to develop a future mobility complex in Chungnam Province, located in the country’s western coastal region. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport confirmed the agreement, which outlines plans for an artificial intelligence data center and a robotics manufacturing facility.

The signing ceremony was attended by officials from both Hyundai Motor Group and the national government. The investment is structured to support the development of infrastructure for advanced technologies central to the automotive group’s strategic goals.

According to the ministry, the agreement details the construction of a large-scale data center designed to support the development of AI technologies for autonomous driving and other mobility services. The plan also includes a factory for manufacturing advanced robotics. While specific details on the types of robots were not released, Hyundai has previously invested in robotics, including its acquisition of the U.S.-based company Boston Dynamics.

In a statement, the Land Ministry outlined the government’s role in the project, which includes providing administrative and infrastructure support. This support is intended to facilitate the establishment of the new complex and includes measures to streamline regulatory processes. The ministry noted that the project is expected to contribute to regional economic development and create jobs in the technology sector.

Hyundai Motor Group officials stated that the investment aligns with the company’s long-term vision of transitioning into a smart mobility solutions provider. The new facilities are intended to serve as a hub for research, development, and production related to future automotive and robotics technologies.

The agreement represents a collaborative effort between the private and public sectors to advance South Korea’s position in high-tech industries. The timeline for the construction and completion of the facilities has not yet been publicly detailed.
