Samsung Union Plans Rally Over Inter-Division Wage Disparity

BusinessSamsung Union Plans Rally Over Inter-Division Wage Disparity

A union representing workers at Samsung Electronics announced it will hold a rally on July 16 to protest compensation differences between the company’s business divisions. The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), which primarily includes employees from the home appliance and mobile device sectors, will stage the demonstration near Samsung’s corporate headquarters in Seoul.

The planned protest centers on a recent wage agreement and bonus structure that the union states disproportionately benefits employees in the company’s semiconductor unit, known as the Device Solutions (DS) division. The union argues that the current bonus system creates a significant pay gap with its members in the Device Experience (DX) division, which encompasses smartphones, televisions, and home appliances.

In a statement, the NSEU said the rally aims to call for a more equitable performance bonus system across all company divisions. The dispute follows a period of high performance and profitability in Samsung’s semiconductor business, which resulted in substantial bonuses for DS division employees. In contrast, the DX division faced different market conditions, leading to lower or no performance-based bonuses for its staff.

This action is the latest in a series of labor disputes at the technology company. On June 7, the NSEU led a one-day strike, which was the first walkout in Samsung Electronics’ 55-year history. The union, which represents over 28,000 workers, or about a fifth of the company’s global workforce, has been in wage negotiations with management for several months.

Samsung Electronics has maintained that it is committed to engaging in dialogue with the union to reach an agreement. The company’s policy has historically tied employee bonuses directly to the financial performance of their specific division.

The July 16 rally is scheduled to take place outside the Seocho office building, a central hub for the company’s operations. The union has not specified how many members are expected to participate in the demonstration. Negotiations between Samsung management and the NSEU are ongoing.
