Secretary of State Rubio announced Tuesday that a U.S. military operation targeting Iran has concluded, stating that the administration determined its primary military objectives have been met. The remarks were made during a public hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where lawmakers questioned the Secretary on the operation’s execution and outcomes.
The hearing was convened to provide congressional oversight of the administration’s recent foreign policy and military actions in the region. During his opening statement, Secretary Rubio provided the administration’s assessment.
“I can report that the authorized military operation has concluded,” Rubio testified before the committee. “The objectives set forth by the administration were achieved, and a message has been delivered. U.S. forces operated with precision to minimize collateral impact.”
Following the statement, committee members from both parties engaged the Secretary in a period of questioning. Lawmakers inquired about the specific metrics used to define mission success, the current status of Iranian military capabilities, and the long-term strategic implications for regional stability.
Representative Jane Miller, the committee’s ranking member, asked for clarification on the operational goals. “Could the Secretary provide this committee with a detailed breakdown of the specific objectives that the administration considers fulfilled, and what evidence supports that assessment?” she asked during the proceedings.
Other members raised questions concerning the diplomatic fallout and the status of communication channels with both allies and adversaries following the operation.
In his responses, Rubio maintained the administration’s position that the operation was limited in scope and intended to address specific threats. He stated that further details on the targets and the results of the strikes would be provided to the committee in a classified briefing scheduled for later in the week.
“The purpose of this action was to degrade specific capabilities that presented a direct threat to U.S. assets and personnel in the region,” Rubio said. “We believe that has been accomplished.”
The military action followed a period of elevated tensions between the United States and Iran. The administration has not released a comprehensive public report detailing the events that prompted the operation or the full extent of the targets involved, citing national security concerns. The hearing is part of the legislative branch’s formal process of reviewing executive branch military engagements. The committee has not yet announced whether further public hearings on the matter will be held.
