Representatives from Singapore and the Pacific Alliance member states of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru convened on June 18 for a seminar on environmental sustainability. The event, held in Singapore, focused on sharing national policies and exploring collaboration on issues including plastic pollution, marine conservation, and the circular economy.
The seminar, titled “Sustainability and the Circular Economy: Opportunities for Singapore and the Pacific Alliance,” was co-hosted by Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the embassies of the four Pacific Alliance nations, according to a statement from the ministry.
In his opening remarks, MFA Second Permanent Secretary Luke Goh addressed what he termed the “triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.” He stated that the event served as a platform to exchange experiences and identify practical solutions to shared environmental challenges.
Ambassadors from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru also delivered remarks, outlining their respective countries’ initiatives and policies aimed at promoting sustainable development.
Panel discussions included government officials, private sector representatives, and academics from both Singapore and the Pacific Alliance. Participants examined national strategies for managing plastic waste, promoting a circular economy—a model focused on reusing and recycling materials to minimize waste—and protecting marine ecosystems.
The seminar highlighted the diplomatic relationship between Singapore and the trade bloc. Singapore is a Candidate Associate State of the Pacific Alliance, and officials noted a shared commitment to addressing global environmental issues through international cooperation. The discussions referenced ongoing negotiations for an international treaty on plastic pollution and commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The event was organized to facilitate the exchange of best practices and to identify opportunities for joint action between Singapore and the Latin American trade bloc in the field of sustainable development.
