SINGAPORE — Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a warning Wednesday to foreign embassies against provoking local sentiment over global geopolitical disputes. The statement comes after the U.S. embassy in Singapore released a social media video sharply critical of China’s claims in the South China Sea.
According to Channel News Asia, the MFA emphasized that such “complex and sensitive matters” should be handled through official diplomatic channels, adding that Singapore does not welcome attempts to use local analogies to shape public opinion on international conflicts.
The U.S. embassy’s video, posted on Facebook, drew attention by comparing China’s territorial claims to inappropriate behavior in Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) corridors. It framed China as a metaphorical neighbor overstepping boundaries in shared public spaces, further likening the 2016 Hague tribunal ruling against China to a town council decision that was ignored.
“China says it ‘owns’ nearly the entire South China Sea. International law says otherwise,” the post read. “Even after the tribunal ruled in 2016 that these claims lack legal basis, Beijing continues construction, patrols, and intimidation.”
China Responds with Condemnation
The Chinese embassy in Singapore swiftly responded with a strongly worded rebuttal, accusing the U.S. of distorting facts and destabilizing the region. The embassy criticized Washington’s use of analogies to sway local opinion and pointed out the irony of the U.S. enforcing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) without having ratified the treaty.
“The U.S. is distorting the truth and putting its own agenda above global rules,” the Chinese embassy stated in a separate Facebook post. “It is, without a doubt, the most destabilizing presence in the South China Sea.”
China also condemned the deployment of intermediate-range missile systems by the U.S. in the region, calling it an act that heightens tensions and divides nations.
Singapore Stresses Neutrality and Diplomatic Engagement
Singapore’s MFA reiterated its commitment to regional stability through diplomacy, urging embassies not to engage in public messaging that could stir domestic reactions or complicate international dialogue.
“Measured diplomacy, not provocative messaging, is what the region needs,” the ministry stated, reinforcing the country’s long-standing position of neutrality and its reliance on multilateral channels to address maritime disputes.
The incident highlights the growing intersection of social media messaging and international relations, as well as Singapore’s sensitivity to being drawn into broader geopolitical narratives.
