South Africa has proceeded to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-finals after a 3-3 draw with Uganda at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Monday.

The outcome enabled Uganda to finish top of Group C with seven points and advance to the CHAN knockout stage for the first time in their history.

The game saw Rogers Torach net a stoppage-time penalty for Uganda in front of 34,194 spectators.

Despite the draw, both teams advanced from the group stage, with South Africa ending up third in their group with six points and thus moving on as one of the best third-placed teams.

CHAN 2024 is the eighth edition of the tournament and the biggest in its history, with 19 teams divided into four groups.

The tournament was originally scheduled for February but was postponed to August 2-30, 2025 and is currently hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The championship is a competition for players who are active in their countries’ domestic leagues, hence, it is a platform for showcasing the local talents of the continent.

The 2024 competition features four groups of six teams, and the first two from each group qualify for the quarter-finals, which is the start of the knockout phase, played on August 22. Algeria also went through to the last eight after a 0-0 draw with Niger in their final group match.
