South Korea Faces Sharpest U.S. Tariff Increase Among Major Trading Partners

BusinessSouth Korea Faces Sharpest U.S. Tariff Increase Among Major Trading Partners

During the second quarter of 2025, the U.S. tariff on South Korean goods skyrocketed compared to the other top 10 trading partners, as the value of duties levied on Korean imports exploded by 47 times from the previous quarter. The sharp increase in tariffs, which amounted to $3.3 billion, ranks South Korea as the sixth-largest contributor to tariff payments from the U.S. trading partners after China, Mexico, Japan, Germany, and Vietnam.

The most affected area was the car industry, with the biggest share of the barrier (57.5%) relating to it. On cars and car parts, it was first April when a 25% tariff was put on finished vehicles, and in May, there was a similar one on parts. Changes in the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement have led to higher costs for Korean exporters without the previously granted exemptions.

In order not to be deeply affected by this and to keep the domestic industry, especially the steelmakers, happy, the South Korean government will take several steps. Support for companies that have been hit by the new tariffs is what the export guarantee program is all about, and thus, these companies will be able to compete in international markets.

According to the projections made by the Bank of Korea, the tariffs in question could result in the reduction of South Korean GDP by up to 0.45 percentage points in 2025 and 0.6 percentage points in 2026. The increase in export costs will be passed on to manufacturing sectors in the form of higher product prices, which, in turn, will affect investment decisions made by companies and their profits.

Furthermore, the situation has gone beyond the political aspects, and it has forced Seoul to increase the intensity of its talks with Washington to seek solutions to tariff differences, among other things, which may result in more favorable conditions for Korean exporters. The whole affair is only a hint of the changing nature of U.S.-South Korea trade relations and also warns about the vulnerability of those industries that are most affected by rapid policy changes in foreign countries.

At large, the U.S. tariff escalation was an indication of how South Korea faced such an economic challenge while struggling with international trade pressures, but still managed to keep industrial growth and competitiveness from declining.
