Massive Sydney Protest Spotlights Political Tensions Over Gaza

PoliticsMassive Sydney Protest Spotlights Political Tensions Over Gaza

Tens of thousands of people marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Organizers said the turnout ranged between 90,000 and 300,000. Police did not give an official count but described the event as one of the city’s largest protests in years.

Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and banners urging stronger action from Canberra. Speakers also called for sanctions on Israel and more humanitarian aid to Gaza.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, former New South Wales premier Bob Carr, and Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi joined the march, giving the protest added political weight.

The rally deepened tensions within the New South Wales Labor Party. MP Anthony D’Adam accused Premier Chris Minns of blocking debate on Gaza policy. Greens justice spokesperson Sue Higginson said state “move-on” laws restricted public protest.

The march disrupted traffic but remained peaceful. Police reported no arrests. Officers said some crowd conditions were “perilous” but manageable.

The protest underscored rising public pressure on leaders to take a stronger stance on the conflict. It also reignited debate over the limits of protest laws in New South Wales.
