On September 21, 2025, it was officially announced that the United Kingdom recognized the State of Palestine. This comes after an announcement made in tandem with Canada and Australia. The decision intends to prevent the extinction of the two-state solution and, finally, open up the way for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the recognition was based on the principle of the Palestinian people’s respect for their right to self-determination. He indicated that the move was not an approval of Hamas, describing the group as a terrorist organization and thus, no future role in governing Gaza. The UK government has demanded that Hamas must set the hostages free, agree to a halt in fighting immediately, and commit to disarmament.
The acknowledgment is coming at a time when violence in Gaza has been mounting, and Israeli settlements have been expanding in the West Bank. The UK government has appealed to Israel to call off its attack on Gaza, facilitate the passage of humanitarian aid, and put an end to settlement activities.
This change in diplomacy is indicative of a concerted international effort to find a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and, at the same time, recognize the rights that are enjoyed by both peoples.
