US Labor Reports, Tech Earnings Set to Influence Markets

BusinessUS Labor Reports, Tech Earnings Set to Influence Markets

Investors will monitor a series of U.S. labor market reports and key corporate earnings from the technology sector during the holiday-shortened trading week beginning Sept. 1, 2025. The economic data, including the August nonfarm payroll report, and financial results from companies such as Salesforce and Broadcom, are expected to provide further insight into the state of the economy and the artificial intelligence industry.

Federal Reserve officials have recently highlighted the labor market as a key factor in future monetary policy decisions. In recent remarks, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell described the labor market as being in a “curious kind of balance that results from a marked slowing in both the supply of and demand for workers,” adding that this “suggests that downside risks to employment are rising.”

This week’s economic calendar includes four significant labor reports. On Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). On Thursday, ADP is scheduled to publish its private employment report, followed by the weekly initial jobless claims data.

The most anticipated release is the August nonfarm payroll report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, due on Friday morning. According to economists surveyed by Dow Jones, expectations are for the U.S. economy to have added 75,000 jobs last month. The survey also projects the unemployment rate to be 4.3%, an increase from 4.2% in July. Fed Governor Christopher Waller stated last week that a particularly weak August jobs report could influence the central bank’s next interest rate decision in September.

On the corporate front, several technology companies are set to report their quarterly earnings.

Salesforce is scheduled to release its results on Wednesday after the market closes. According to estimates from LSEG, the consensus is for the enterprise software company to report quarterly revenue of $10.14 billion and adjusted earnings of $2.78 per share. Market observers will be focused on the company’s current remaining performance obligation (cRPO), a metric of future revenue. Wall Street expects Salesforce’s cRPO to be $29.15 billion, which would represent 10% year-over-year growth.

Broadcom will follow with its earnings report on Thursday evening. The semiconductor and software company’s performance is often viewed as an indicator of trends in the AI sector. LSEG data shows Wall Street expects Broadcom to report revenue of $15.83 billion and earnings per share of $1.65. Analysts at Citigroup wrote in a recent note that they expect the company to report “above-consensus results driven by continued AI strength.” Commentary from the company is anticipated to cover its custom chip design services and its networking products, as well as its software division, which includes VMWare.
