US May Inflation Data Expected to Show Rise, Driven by Gas Prices

BusinessUS May Inflation Data Expected to Show Rise, Driven by Gas Prices

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release its Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for May, with economists forecasting a potential rise in the annual inflation rate. This expectation is largely based on an increase in gasoline prices observed during the month, a key component of the consumer spending metric.

According to a consensus forecast from economists surveyed by Reuters, the headline CPI is projected to show a 0.1% increase from the previous month and a 3.4% rise on a year-over-year basis. This annual figure would be unchanged from the rate reported in April.

A primary driver of the expected increase is the energy sector. Data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) indicated that the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline climbed during May. Analysts attribute the movement in energy costs to global oil market dynamics and supply considerations.

Market observers and policymakers will also closely monitor the core CPI reading, which excludes the more volatile categories of food and energy to provide a view of underlying inflation trends. The forecast for core CPI indicates a 0.3% month-over-month increase and a 3.5% rise from the previous year. If realized, the annual core inflation rate would represent a slight moderation from the 3.6% figure recorded in April.

The upcoming inflation data is a significant economic indicator influencing the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. The central bank has maintained its benchmark federal funds rate in a target range of 5.25% to 5.50% for several months in its effort to guide inflation back toward its 2% long-term target.

In previous statements, Federal Reserve officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, have emphasized the need for more evidence that inflation is on a sustainable path downward before they would consider adjusting interest rates. The May CPI report will provide the latest data point for the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) as it assesses economic conditions.

The release of the CPI report is scheduled to occur on the same day the FOMC concludes its two-day policy meeting. Following the meeting, the committee will release a statement on its interest rate decision and update its economic projections.
