BusinessUS Stocks Fluctuate on Earnings Guidance, Downgrades, Trial Pauses

Several U.S. companies experienced notable stock price movements in premarket trading Friday, influenced by new corporate earnings guidance, clinical trial announcements, and analyst rating changes. Firms including Netflix, Nucor, and Xenon Pharmaceuticals were among those with significant shifts in valuation ahead of the market open.

In the steel sector, shares of Nucor Corp. and Steel Dynamics Inc. each declined more than 1.5%. The movement followed the companies’ release of third-quarter earnings guidance that was below the consensus estimates compiled by financial data firm FactSet. In its statement, Nucor specified that it expects earnings to increase in its steel mills and steel products segments but decrease in its raw materials segment.

Netflix Inc. saw its shares fall by more than 3% after investment bank Wells Fargo downgraded the company’s stock to an “underweight” rating. In a note to clients, Wells Fargo analysts cited projections for lower margin expansion in 2027 and 2028. The bank’s report pointed to engagement trends and the company’s content schedule for the second half of 2026 as factors in its revised forecast.

Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc. stock dropped 25% after the company announced a pause on new patient enrollment in its clinical studies for treatments targeting major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. According to the company, the temporary pause was implemented following the discovery of neuropsychiatric side effects during the trials.

In the technology and financial sectors, companies with exposure to cryptocurrency saw share price increases. The gains coincided with the price of bitcoin rising 2% to cross the $78,000 level. Trading platform Coinbase Global Inc. rose 1%, and Robinhood Markets Inc. increased 2.5%. Shares of MicroStrategy Inc., a company that holds significant bitcoin reserves, climbed 3%.

Separately, Macom Technology Solutions Holdings Inc. stock rose 3% after BMO Capital Markets upgraded the stock to an “outperform” rating. Analysts at BMO stated the company’s valuation had become attractive after its stock price had fallen more than 35% from its 2026 highs. The firm’s note added that business fundamentals in Macom’s data center, industrial, and defense segments remained strong.
