Warren Buffett’s Media Habits & Berkshire’s Lennar Stake Increase

BusinessWarren Buffett's Media Habits & Berkshire's Lennar Stake Increase

A report from The Wall Street Journal published in early October detailed the media consumption habits of Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, while separate regulatory filings showed the company has increased its investment in homebuilder Lennar Corp. The article cited interviews with Buffett’s friends, and the Securities and Exchange Commission filings outlined stock purchases made on Oct. 1 and 2.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Buffett regularly watches YouTube clips in the evenings. The report, citing friends of the investor, stated his viewing selections are typically unrelated to finance. Instead, his interests reportedly include vintage commercials, musical performances by artists such as Frank Sinatra and Paul Anka, and speeches.

Sharon Osberg, a bridge champion and friend of Buffett, was quoted in the report as a frequent viewing companion. Osberg said the content can range from documentaries to international talent shows. She also noted that Buffett has watched clips featuring his late business partner, Charlie Munger.

The report also stated that Buffett’s interest in the platform was not connected to Berkshire’s investment in Alphabet, YouTube’s parent company, citing friends who said he watches the clips for personal enjoyment.

In separate news related to Berkshire Hathaway’s investment activities, the company disclosed in an SEC filing that it purchased an additional $192.6 million in shares of Lennar. The filing indicated the purchase included 2.4 million Class A shares at an average price of $79.65 and 15,000 Class B shares at an average price of $78.33.

These transactions were executed on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Berkshire is required by SEC rules to disclose additional purchases within two business days because its ownership stake in the company exceeds 10%.

According to disclosures, Berkshire Hathaway has invested a total of $595.3 million in Lennar shares over 11 trading days since Sept. 17. Following the most recent purchases, Berkshire’s disclosed stake in the homebuilder stands at 12.2%, with a reported value of $2.2 billion based on closing prices at the time of the report. This is an increase from the end of the previous year, when the company owned 7.2 million shares valued at $742 million.
