Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that his country is prepared to accept a U.S.-brokered “energy ceasefire,” but stated the agreement is contingent on Russia’s adherence to the same terms. The remarks were made in a live-streamed address, during which Zelenskyy also reported ongoing drone attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.
The proposed ceasefire was announced Sunday by former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to the Ukrainian president’s comments. Zelenskyy said that if Russia does not agree to the terms, Ukraine will respond.
“If the Americans need it, we are ready to sign these guarantees to make sure they can be trusted, and it’s important that we all see this situation in the same way,” Zelenskyy stated during the address on Oct. 12, 2026.
Zelenskyy also said that Russian forces had continued attacks on Ukrainian territory after the ceasefire proposal was made public.
“All morning today, more and more Russian jet-powered shaheds have continued to enter our skies over Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities,” he said. “We shoot down many of them, and if we didn’t, there would clearly be even more damage to our energy infrastructure.”
He characterized the actions as a direct message from the Kremlin regarding the proposal, stating, “For now, this is Putin’s answer to Trump.”
The president’s address followed his statements on Sunday regarding Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian energy targets. These included an attack reported at a power plant in Kharkiv, a city in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. No independent verification of the attacks or the proposed ceasefire’s details has been made available at this time.
