Zimbabwe Blood Service Adopts New Global Safety Standards

Top PostsZimbabwe Blood Service Adopts New Global Safety Standards

The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) announced Friday that its blood supply system now aligns with international safety benchmarks, a development it attributes to the adoption of new screening technology. The statement was made by NBSZ Chief Executive Lucy Marowa during a World Blood Donor Day event at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ Ntabazinduna Training School.

Speaking at the commemoration, Marowa stated that recent laboratory innovations have enhanced the safety of the country’s blood transfusion services. According to Marowa, the NBSZ has implemented advanced screening methods to test all donated blood for transfusion-transmissible infections, bringing its procedures in line with what she described as global best practices.

“New laboratory innovations have elevated the country’s transfusion service,” Marowa said during her address.

The announcement was made on World Blood Donor Day, an annual observance established by the World Health Organization to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and to thank voluntary blood donors for their contributions.

The event was hosted at a training facility for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, which collaborates with the NBSZ on blood donation initiatives.

The NBSZ is the national organization tasked with collecting, processing, and distributing blood and blood products throughout Zimbabwe. Its stated mission is to provide an adequate and safe blood supply to the nation’s healthcare facilities. The organization relies on voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors to maintain its supply. The new safety protocols mentioned by Marowa are part of this operational mandate.
