The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have arrested a 41-year-old man at the Beitbridge border crossing for allegedly attempting to smuggle 48 boxes containing drugs and other substances. ZRP National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest and stated the seized goods have an estimated value of US$12,000.
The incident occurred at the Beitbridge Border Post, a primary point of entry between Zimbabwe and South Africa and one of the busiest land border crossings in the region. According to the police report, the suspect was apprehended during routine border enforcement activities.
In a statement confirming the details, Commissioner Nyathi identified the suspect but official charges have not yet been publicized. The police statement specified that the man was in possession of 48 boxes containing an assortment of drugs and undeclared substances at the time of his arrest.
The contents of the boxes are undergoing official examination to determine the specific nature of the drugs and substances involved. Officials have not yet released a detailed inventory of the seized items to the public.
Beitbridge is a significant commercial hub, processing substantial volumes of private and commercial traffic daily. Authorities at the border post are responsible for customs, immigration, and security screenings for all individuals and cargo passing between the two nations.
The ZRP has stated that the suspect is in custody pending further investigation into the matter. No additional details regarding the suspect’s motivations or the intended destination of the goods have been released by authorities. The case remains under active investigation.
