The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into the deaths of four schoolgirls who drowned in a dam in Chegutu. Authorities are treating the case as a suspected culpable homicide following reports that the girls entered the water after a confrontation with a group of boys over allegations of illegal fishing.

According to initial reports from the ZRP, the incident involved four girls and a group of seven boys at a local dam. The boys allegedly accused the girls of fishing in the dam without permission. Following the verbal exchange, the four girls reportedly attempted to flee by swimming across the water, but they did not reach the other side.

One of the deceased has been identified as Letty Sedrick, 14. The names of the other three victims have not yet been officially released by police pending notification of their families. All four bodies were later recovered from the dam.

In a statement, the ZRP confirmed that an investigation is active. The case is being handled under the classification of suspected culpable homicide, which refers to the unlawful killing of a person through negligence.

Officials have not yet provided details on the status of the seven boys who were reportedly present during the incident or whether they have been questioned by investigators. Further information regarding the specific date and time of the drownings has not been made public.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather evidence and witness statements to determine the full sequence of events leading to the deaths. No charges have been filed at this time.
