Zimbabwean Coalition Sungano YeVanhu Reports Threats Against Leader

PoliticsZimbabwean Coalition Sungano YeVanhu Reports Threats Against Leader

A coalition of civil society groups in Zimbabwe, Sungano YeVanhu, has called for a police investigation into alleged threats made against its convener, Reverend Kupa Mtata. In a statement released on Wednesday, the organization said the threats were linked to its public opposition to the proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3.

According to the statement, Reverend Mtata received a threatening message which the coalition described as an “attack on constitutional democracy.” Sungano YeVanhu asserted that the incident is part of what it called a “broader pattern of intimidation” aimed at individuals and groups opposing the constitutional changes. The organization did not disclose the specific contents of the message.

“We are calling upon the Zimbabwe Republic Police to institute an urgent, thorough, and impartial investigation into the threats,” the coalition stated. The group urged law enforcement to ensure the safety of its members and other citizens engaged in public discourse.

Sungano YeVanhu is a network of church-based and non-governmental organizations that have campaigned against the proposed constitutional amendments. The coalition has been vocal in its position that the changes could undermine democratic principles and accountability in the country.

The proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3 includes several provisions that have been the subject of public debate. Among the key changes are proposals related to the appointment of judges and the extension of presidential term limits. Proponents of the amendment argue that the changes are necessary for governmental efficiency, while opponents, including Sungano YeVanhu, have raised concerns about the potential consolidation of executive power.

As of the time of reporting, officials from the Zimbabwe Republic Police have not issued a public comment on the matter.
