Sudan’s army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced new changes in the military leadership on Tuesday, tightening his hold as fighting with the Rapid Support Forces continues. The move was shown on state television, with several officers promoted and others shifted into new roles.

State media said the reshuffle covered the general staff and top commanders. Officials close to the army described it as an effort by Burhan to keep control of the chain of command and prevent cracks inside the force after more than a year of war.

The conflict, now in its 16th month, began in April 2023 between Burhan’s forces and the RSF led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The battles have spread to large parts of Sudan, leaving millions displaced and worsening the humanitarian crisis. Entire communities have been emptied, while food and medicine shortages continue to grow.

Foreign governments and regional mediators have called for a ceasefire many times, but none have lasted. Each round of talks has broken down quickly. Burhan’s latest changes show he is determined to consolidate power in the army, even as the fighting deepens Sudan’s crisis and weakens the state.
