From August 6 to 8, the Nigerian military carried out synchronized air and land maneuvers, as a result of which, a large number of armed bandits were eliminated.
The operations extended to the four states of the northwestern region, namely Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger. Major General Edward Buba, the defense spokesperson, while highlighting the extent of the bombardments, pointed out that these activities aimed at the annihilation of the gangs’ dwellings, their arrangements, and the facilities used by them for kidnappings, extortion, as well as violent attacks on the ordinary populace.
However, the issue of armed groups, “bandits” as they are referred to locally, has led to severe consequences in Nigeria’s northwest and north-central regions during the last few years. The villages have been besieged by the “bandits,” who have at the same time ransacked the people’s belongings and taken them hostage for a ransom.
They have been using the area’s rough terrain to escape the police and, thus, creating continuous security problems for the officers.
The military-political operations were concentrated on the objective of disabling the gangs’ functionalities through the destruction of the camps, supply road, and weapons storage facilities.
The raids led to the disruption of several criminal organizations that had, at the same time, allowed some of the hostages to gain their freedom and carry out the seizure of weapons, ammunition, and stolen livestock.
As part of a larger plan to stabilise the situation, the Nigerian government has elevated the armed forces’ deployment to the areas where the incidents have occurred.
This massive security operation is a direct reaction to the request of local leaders and the community, who have been calling for more stringent measures against the armed groups.
The military has committed itself to keeping the pressure up on the bandits by employing all means available to them, i.e., through continuous monitoring, selectively targeted operations, and cooperation with authorities at the local level.
Although it has not been possible to independently verify the exact numbers of casualties, these operations qualify as a stage in the intervention program aimed at repressing insecurity in the region.
